International Classification (IPC)

The International Patent Classification (IPC), created as a result of the 1971 Strasbourg Agreement, provides a hierarchical system of language-independent symbols for classifying invention patents and utility models according to different areas existing technologies.

The objectives of a patent classification system are:
  • Effective search tool for retrieving patent documents by IP offices and other users;
  • Instrument for orderly arrangement of patent documents in order to facilitate access to information;
  • Enable the selective dissemination of information;
  • Investigate the state of the art in certain fields of technology;
  • Preparation of IP statistics to assess the country’s technological development.
